Georgia Rattlesnake is an old porch-swing watermelon with a history stretching back to the 1830s. Long fruits wear dramatic bands of dark and light green, hiding sweet rose-colored flesh beneath a thick rind — and plenty of seeds made for old-fashioned seed-spitting contests.

The productive vines bear substantial melons weighing about 25 to 30 pounds, making this heirloom every bit as memorable in the garden as it is at the summer table.
