Inside is the same Cucurbita pepo 'Small Sugar' we sell year-round in the kraft line: the heirloom pie pumpkin, 6 to 8 lb, with dense, dry, stringless flesh and a rind that keeps for months.
What it is good for
- A gift for someone who bakes. This is the variety behind a real pumpkin pie, not the watery jack-o'-lantern sort.
- Party favors and table settings at an autumn dinner or a Halloween supper.
- The gardener who has everything. Costs less than a card, lasts a whole season.
How to grow
- Sow: 1 inch deep, once frost has passed and the soil is warm.
- Space: 3 to 5 feet apart; rows 5 to 8 feet.
- Sun: Full sun.
- Germination: 5 to 10 days at 70 to 90°F.
- Harvest: When the rind hardens and the stem begins to dry and cork.
- Store: Cool, dark and dry. A good keeper.
In Florida
Frost is not the limiting factor here — heat is. UF/IFAS recommends sowing pumpkins in early July for North Florida, mid-July for Central Florida and early August for South Florida, which lines the harvest up with the decorating season rather than the worst of the summer.
Pumpkins are heavy feeders. Work compost into the bed before sowing and give the vines room to run. Keep the soil evenly moist while they are flowering and setting fruit, and water at soil level rather than over the leaves. Bees set the fruit, so avoid spraying while the flowers are open.
Heirloom, open-pollinated and non-GMO. Save seed from a well-isolated plant and it comes back true.
