Dark, dramatic, and wonderfully unusual, Exotic Black Pumpkin produces deeply ribbed pumpkins with striking charcoal-black to very dark blue-green skin. The vigorous vines produce broad green foliage and brilliant golden-yellow blossoms before setting their distinctive dark fruit. Allow pumpkins to mature fully on the vine for their deepest color and best storage quality.

Black pumpkins are especially striking planted alongside burgundy flowers, dark foliage, ornamental grasses, and traditional orange pumpkins for a dramatic contrast.

Sowing: Direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has thoroughly warmed. Plant seeds approximately 1 inch deep. Seeds may also be started indoors about 3-4 weeks before the last frost and transplanted carefully after temperatures warm.

Pumpkins are heavy feeders. Work compost or other organic matter into the planting area before sowing and provide plenty of room for the vines to spread.

Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly while plants are flowering and developing fruit. Water deeply at soil level rather than wetting the foliage whenever possible.

Pumpkins produce separate male and female flowers and depend heavily on bees and other pollinators for fruit set. Avoid spraying insecticides while flowers are open.

Harvest: Allow fruit to mature on the vine until it has developed its characteristic dark color, the rind has hardened, and the stem begins to dry and turn corky. Cut the pumpkin from the vine with several inches of stem attached rather than pulling it free.

After harvest, cure pumpkins in a warm, dry, well-ventilated location before storing.
