Deep purple-red heads bring a jewel-toned richness to the garden in Red Acre, an early-maturing cabbage that forms compact, handsome heads weighing about 2 to 4 pounds. Its tidy plants are well suited to smaller garden spaces and warm, humid growing conditions, with resistance to cabbage yellows and splitting and good flavor and storage quality after harvest.
For a spring crop, start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and transplant after the last frost date. For an autumn harvest, direct sow in midsummer. Give Red Acre full sun when you can, with a little afternoon shade welcome in hot weather. Heads are ready in about 76 days. 1.75 gram packet contains approximately 515 seeds.
